The 47, 000-ton supertanker “Aurora” arrived at Israel’s southern port of Eilat yesterday on its maiden voyage from Japan, where the vessel was built. The tanker is operated by the Swiss Somerfin Investment Company and was manned on its first voyage by a Japanese crew and a British captain. An Israeli crew is expected to take over the vessel shortly.
On hand to greet the arrival of the new tanker were Minister of Communications Yitzhak Ben-Aharon and hundreds of residents of Eilat. The Somerfin firm operates tankers as a Joint concern with the Israeli Zim and EI Yam shipping lines.
