Mrs. Henry N. Rapaport, national president of the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (formerly the National Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America) told Conservative Jews here that her organization would “give full support in the establishment and strengthening of the Conservative movement in Israel.” Her pledge came during an unprecedented event in which she delivered the sermon at a Sabbath service in a Jerusalem synagogue.
Mrs. Rapaport coupled her statement with a plea that all observant Jews of whatever persuasion “join hands in support of our religious values, and to strengthen each other’s hands in an increasingly secular society.” She urged a 20th century approach to prayer without transplanting American religious practices to Israel. Mrs. Rapaport is leading a group of American synagogue women leaders from throughout the United States who are participating in a leadership conference sponsored by the Women’s League.
