A bust of the late Justice Louis D. Brandeis was presented to the United States Supreme Court yesterday by George Maurice Morris of this city, president of the American Bar Association, at the opening of the court’s 1942-3 term. Nearly 500 persons were on hand in the great courtroom to witness the ceremony, which also marked the first anniversary of Justice Brandeis’ death.
Chief Justice Harlan Stone accepted the bust on behalf of the court. “In accepting it,” he said, “we are happy in the recognition that the bust which you present is something more than a mere record of his countenance, for it is a work of art in which the hand of the artist has revealed the spiritual beauty and intellectual distinction which were characteristic of the man.”
The bust, work of Eleanor Platt of New York, has been on exhibition there at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Thomas E. Waggaman, marshal of the court, supervised the erection of the sculpture on a Vermont marble pedestal in the east portion of the library. Mrs. Louis D. Brandeis, widow of the late jurist, was present.
