The issuance of the new translation of the Torah, by the Jewish Publication Society of America, was hailed here by Supreme Court Justice Arthur J. Goldberg as an exercise of the fundamental right of religious freedom, guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U. S. Constitution.
Justice Goldberg thus characterized the publication of the translation at a dinner here last night, dedicating the new work. It was his first major address since his elevation to the Supreme Court. The translation committee was hailed at the dinner for producing “the most accurate” translation of the Biele ever made, directly from the Hebrew text as preserved by the Masoretic scribes.
Dr. Harry M. Orlinsky, who was editor-in-chief of the Torah translation, declared that the appearance of this translation, which breaks radically with past trends and inaccuracies in Bible translations, is a tribute to the strength, stature and maturity of the American Jewish community.
