The progress of the work of the Jewish Health Organization of Great Britain, which is a part of the World Union Oze, was reported at the third annual meeting of the organization held on Sunday.
The outstanding developments of the year’s work, according to the annual report, were the arrangements for the early opening of a clinic for nervous and difficult children, the institution of a health Sabbath to form part of the annual health week celebrations, the investigation into the mortality of Jews from cancer the completion of the investigation into the comparative intelligence of Jewish and non-Jewish children, and the organization of a service for the hygienic supervision of Jewish religious classes.
The year has also seen continued progress in the organization’s main work, the instruction of the Jewish public in the principles and practices of public and private hygiene, and further headway has been made in regard to Jewish vital and health statistics.
The organization will launch a public appeal for funds, in connection with which messages of endorsement have been received from Neville Chamberlain, the Minister of Health, Professor Einstein, the head of the Pasteur Institute in Paris, and many others.
The steps taken by the organization for the setting up of a Jewish statistical service have led to the Burial Societies of the United Synagogue and the Federation of Synagogues agreeing to supply monthly returns of deaths. The Association of Jewish Friendly Societies has taken the necessary steps to make available for statistical purposes the records they have accumulated in regard to the state of health of their members, material affording valuable information on the health of Jewish workers.
The records which the Jewish Burial Societies have placed at the disposal of the investigators, together with a mass of special information, supplied by the Registrar General has formed the material of a Jewish Cancer Mortality Investigation by the Society. Over 50,000 Jewish death records have been dealt with, and considerable progress has been made in collating this body of facts collected now for the first time.
