The immediate formation of a Jewish Welfare Federation in Worcester to make possible a coordinated and aggressive program for local Jewry is urged in the survey of the Worcester Jewish community which was issued late today. A budget of $80,000 annually was named as a sum sufficient to care for local charitable and social work as well as to handle national and international Jewish activities.
The survey just completed by investigators from the Jewish School of Social Research, New York, also urges further concentration and widening the scope of the work now being done by the United Jewish Charities.
The proposed federation would include the Charities, the Jewish Home for Aged and Orphans, the Y.M.H.A. and the Worcester Hebrew Free Loan Society, the report declares. Such a plan will draw together the various Jewish groups into an effective working unit.
That the Jews of Worcester form a great proportion of those included in non-Jewish organizations is revealed by the survey. Jews form 40% of the total of all members using the gymnasium facilities of the Y.M.C.A. while out of a total membership of 2,214 in the same organization more than 10% are professedly Jewish.
