The first synagogue built since the end of the war in the U.S zone of Germany was dedicated here over the week-end by Dr. Wilhelm Weinberg, rabbi for the province of Hesse. A small group of Frankfurt Jews–the remnants of this city’s pre-war Jewish population of 20,000-partlcipated in the ceremonies, which included lighting of the Eternal Light.
The synagogue, housed in a building which was formerly a Jewish children’s home and was later transformed into a center for the children of Nazii Party members, is the only Jewish house of worship in this city which at one time had 20 synagogues. Addressing the small congregation in a tear-stained voice, Rabbi Weinberg declared: “Our eyes are as springs of tears when we recall our slain brethren. We will not accuse, but we will not forgive, for Judgment is the Lord’s, We must not forget that for us the ultimate goal must be to return to our new but ancient home – Israel.
