An expedition whose purpose is to prove whether or not the Einstein theory is true, will depart in a few days from Singapore for a place in Sumatra called Benkoela. The expedition is headed by Professor R.W. Marriott of Swarthmore College, in a suburb of this city.
Upon a certain night next month, when the stars that were photographed by the same expedition during the total eclipse last January, will be in the same relative positions as they were then, the astronomer will take photographs that are expected to solve a great problem for the scientific world.
“If the photographs to be taken by Professor Marriott shall show the stars in the same positions as they are in the photographs taken last January.” said Professor John Miller, director of the Sproul Observatory at Swarthmore, “the Einstein theory will be proved false.
“If the stars shall be shown to be apparently elsewhere in the firmament than they are shown in January’s photographs, the truth of Einstein’s theory will not be definitely proved, but it will have advanced measurably toward verification.”
