The Swedish Government is likely to join the Inter-Governmental Committee for Refugees under certain conditions safeguarding its neutrality, it was learned here today.
At present, the Swedish Government is mapping out plans to establish its own organization for relief and rehabilitation of refugees. A project will be submitted to the Riksdag next week by the Government urging the creation of a governmental body in the form of a commission to study relief and rehabilitation problems of refugees now residing in Sweden and in the neighboring countries. The project also includes plans for future cooperation with international bodies in relief activities.
In case its neutrality makes it impossible for Sweden to join the Inter-Governmental Committee, a commission may be appointed to maintain contact with this committee as well as with the relief-and-rehabilitation machinery which will be established by the United Nations following the conference which is scheduled to be held in Atlantic City next month. The Swedish commission will also consult the governments of Norway and Finland as to their reconstruction plans.
