Maj. Sigmund Ahnfelt, commander of the Swedish unit assigned to the United Nations Middle East police force, has resigned his post in the face of criticism directed at him. The criticism deal with the fact that until 1938, Maj. Ahnfelt had been a leading member of the Swedish-Nazi youth movement.
The announcement of his resignation was made in Parliament today by the Defense Minister who said that the reason for the resignation was that a question had arisen whether it was “wise” to keep Ahnfelt in command of the force and risk a challenge by one of the belligerents.
Dagens Nyheter, a leading Swedish newspaper, credited the Jewish Telegraphic Agency with playing a leading role in bringing about the resignation of Maj. Ahnfelt by inquiring at United Nations headquarters about his record as a Nazi.
