Acting on the request of a Jewish woman, who is a Swedish citizen, the authorities here lodged an official complaint with the German legation asking an inquiry into the circumstances of the death of her sister, a Swedish citizen who was deported by the Nazis from Norway to Poland.
The sister was transported together with other Jews from Oslo in a cattle train and died en route before their destination was reached.
Replying to the Swedish complaint, German diplomatic representatives today declared that the woman would not have been deported from Norway had the Nazi authorities there been aware of the fact that she was a Swedish citizen. The German diplomats admitted that she died while being deported, but claimed that “every effort was made to save her life when she was taken ill.”
