Swiss banks, the World Jewish Congress and lawyers representing Holocaust survivors opened negotiations in Washington to reach a settlement of World War II-era claims. The talks, held under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, follow a pledge last month by Switzerland’s three largest banks to negotiate a settlement that could involve compensation for Jewish bank deposits and possibly other claims for insurance policies, confiscated real estate and compensation for slave labor. But it remains unclear whether the banks would accept the claims or pass them on to other Swiss institutions.
