The Swiss government has opened a liaison office in the Palestinian city of Jericho.
The office, believed to be the first opened by any country in this autonomous West Bank town, is directed by a former International Red Cross delegate, Annik Tonti.
The Swiss have allocated $40 million over a five-year period to help the Palestinian autonomy, with amounts earmarked for administration, education, rehabilitation of former prisoners, to bring in foreign experts and to promote democracy.
Meanwhile, the Palestine Liberation Organization is opening an office in Bern.
