A proposal to grant freedom of movement to refugees from Italy and France and other Nazi-dominated countries who found temporary asylum in Switzerland but are now interned in special camps, has been taken under advisement by the Swiss Government.
A report to this effect has reached the Hias-Ica Emigration Association office here from its headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal, which is maintaining constant contact with the Union of Swiss Jewish Communities in its refugee aid work. The Union informed the Hias-Ica Emigration Association that the Swiss authorities would be prepared to release from the camps such refugees whose relatives or friends in the Western Hemisphere would furnish, through a recognized relief agency or bank, a financial guarantee for the respective refugee’s maintenance for a period of six months. The cost of living would be estimated on the basis of 250 Swiss francs per month for each person.
The proposal also envisages the release of refugees from labor camps if they are above the age of sixty or those whose health condition necessitates such action.
