The “cowardly attack” on the “late and esteemed Rabbis Judah L. Magnes and Stephen S. Wise” in testimony released by the House Committee on Un-American Activities was strongly condemned by the executive committee of the Synagogue Council of America, which represents all branches of American religious Jewry.
“This is a practice repugnant to ethical procedure, alien to religious feeling and completely contrary to established American principles of fair play.” the executive committee declared. “The lives of Rabbis Magnes and Wise were open books, in which were written large their dedication to the highest prophetic pronouncements of their faith and the ideals of democracy, of peace among men, of integrity in government.”
