President Eisenhower today became the first recipient of the “Judaism and World Peace” Award of the Synagogue Council of America at a White House ceremony marked by several precedents in American and Jewish history.
The award, consisting of an original bronze sculpture of the Prophet Isaiah “beating swords into plowshares,” was presented to the President by Rabbi Max D. Davidson, president of the Synagogue Council and a delegation of rabbinic and congregational leaders from the Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Jewish movements.
The Synagogue Council of America is the national coordinating agency for the major branches of religious Jewry, comprising the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the Rabbinical Assembly of America, the Rabbinical Council of America, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, and the United Synagogue of America.
