The Synagogue Council of America issued today an appeal previously made to Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser, urging him to free imprisoned Jews in time for Yom Kippur, so that “they might return to their homes and to their synagogue to worship God in peace and security.”
Rabbi Jacob Philip Rudin, president of the Council — the coordinating agency for Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jewry in the United States — noted that Nasser had issued New Year greetings this year to the Egyptian Jewish community. Observing that Egyptian Jews are “at this moment being subjected to a wave of terror, involving loss of life, liberty and property,” Rabbi Rudin urged Nasser to translate his New Year wishes “into meaningful reality by freeing Egyptian Jews” on the eve of Yom Kippur.
