An Orthodox synagogue, The Sons of Israel Synagogue of the Bronx, was severely damaged early yesterday morning in a two-alarm fire. The fire was discovered at 4:38 a.m. by Rabbi Jekudhiel Fuch, who reported it to the authorities. According to the rabbi, the interior of the synagogue was completely damaged and six Torahs, holy scrolls, and many sacred books and articles were destroyed. Rabbi Fuch called it “total destruction” which left only the walls remaining. Recently, the rabbi said, there have been many fires in the neighborhood’s abandoned buildings. The police, however, are investigating this fire which they have termed suspicious.
