The Committee on Synagogue Musi# of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, which has been at work on a revision of the Union Hymnal, met recently in New York and practically completed the work of verse selection. Out of a great mass of material, chiefly by Jewish poets, sixty-six poems were selected for the new Union Hymnal. The Musical Editor, Abraham W. Binder, organist and musical director of the Free Synagogue, a Professor of Music at the Jewish Institute of Religion and a well-known composer and musician, has already set many of these poems to music. Many other well-known Jewish composers, including Joseph Achron, Rubin Goldmark and Pincus Jassinowsky, were invited to contribute to the Hymnal.
A sub-committee, with Rabbi Free-hof as chairman, is at work composing new services for the use of the religious schools as well as for the small congregations in rural communities.
