For the first time in the history of the United Synagogue, organization of Ashkenazi Jewish congregations in Britain, women have been granted voting rights in synagogual elections. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Council of the United Synagogue, augmented by representatives of all member congregations.
Women, however, will not be eligible for office. The decision, adopted by an overwhelming majority, provides that only women who hold seats in the congregation of their own right shall be entitled to the vote.
