Replying to sharp criticism voiced against him for the interview he gave on his return here from Germany in connection with the Jewish question, Dr. George C. Rughland, the city health commissioner, today admitted that “persecution does exist in Germany but it was not my duty to report about it.” And the interview, he claimed, “was all misquoted.”
Dr. Rughland was originally criticized for his “gratuitous insult to thousands of Jews who gathered to protest against German governmental cruelties,” by Rabbi Jesse Bienenfeld of Temple Adath Jeshuron.
The city official’s answer is not considered satisfactory by the Jewish community.
