THE SYRIAN GOVERNMENT HAS TAKEN STRONG ACTION AGAINST ARMS SMUGGLING AND ILLICIT MIGRATION ACROSS THE BORDER INTO PALESTINE, PREMIER JAMIL BEY MARDAM ANNOUNCED TODAY.
THE ACTION WAS TAKEN, THE PREMIER SAID IN AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT, IN COOPERATION WITH GREAT BRITAIN AND FRANCE. HIS STATEMENT CONDEMNED VIOLENCE.
THE SYRIAN GOVERNMENT MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT AFTER THE FRENCH HIGH COMMISSIONER, COUNT DAMIEN DE MARTEL, HAD REQUESTED IT TO FORBID SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES DIRECTED AT THE PALESTINE GOVERNMENT. JAMAL HUSSEINI AND OTHER PALESTINE ARAB LEADERS HAD FLED TO DAMASCUS FROM A BRITISH DRIVE ON ARAB AGITATORS AND TERRORISTS.
THESE ARAB LEADERS WERE AT FIRST REPORTED TO BE PLANNING TO ESTABLISH A CENTER OF ARAB AGITATION AGAINST THE PALESTINE GOVERNMENT, BUT LATER IT WAS UNDERSTOOD THE ARAB CENTER HAD BEEN SET UP AT BAGHDAD, IRAQ.
LAST MONTH THE NOW-SUPPRESSED ARAB SUPREME COMMITTEE OF PALESTINE HAD BEEN REPORTED BUYING ARMS IN DAMASCUS TO BE SMUGGLED INTO THE HOLY LAND AND ORGANIZING MERCENARIES TO CROSS THE BORDER WHEN REBELLION WOULD BREAK OUT.
AT THAT TIME THE PREMIER WAS QUOTED AS ADMITTING THAT HE WAS AWARE OF THE ARMS SMUGGLING, BUT DECLARING THAT IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP IT.
