A United Nations spokesman confirmed today that Syria has agreed to extend the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on the Golan Heights for another six months with no conditions attached. Following this announcement. Israel’s UN Ambassador Chaim Herzog gave his government’s assent to the six-month extension. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim left Damascus today and is expected to return here tonight.
The UN spokesman added that Syria attaches great importance to the negotiating process in the Middle East. The Security Council is scheduled to meet at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow to vote on extension of the mandate which is to expire May 30. The meeting will be followed by informal consultations among Council members.
