Syria and Lebanon announced plans to forge diplomatic ties. Wednesday’s announcement during a visit to Syria by Lebanese Prime Minister Michel Suleiman may herald the end of Syrian claims to Lebanon — a key Western precondition for Syria’s quest for normalization. Syria’s willingness to recognize Lebanon could signal a further distancing from Iran. Israel is currently in Turkish-brokered peace talks with Syria, partly to wean the country away from the Iranian sphere of influence.
