Syria today again complained to the United Nations that Britain, France, Israel, Turkey “and other countries” are preparing armed aggression against the Damascus Government despite the fact that a detailed report received by Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold from the UN military observers shows that on three successive days last week “no unusual military activity” was found anywhere on the roads in Israel leading to the Syrian frontier.
The report to Mr. Hammarskjold shows that the UN military observers carefully inspected not only roads but also 21 cities towns and settlements on the Israeli side there troop concentrations might conceivably been masked if Israel intended to attack Syria. In every case, Mr. Hammarskjold was assured, “no unusual military activity was reported.”
Yesterday, Israel’s Foreign Minister Mrs. Golda Meir said that Israel fears a Soviet-supported attack by Syria and is considering asking the UN General Assembly to take up the situation. Mrs. Meir said the Israel Government was considering an appeal to the General Assembly before Syria sent a message to Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold in which it complained of a “threat to Syria’s safety” from Israel Britain, France and Turkey. She said Syria’s complaint may be an attempt to “hide the real situation in Syria,” where a build-up of arms supplied by Soviet Russia has been reported. She made her remarks in Washington on the “Meet the Press” television interview.
