Syria is interested in resuming peace negotiations with Israel, according to the Israeli daily Ma’ariv. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent statement that he would withdraw Israeli troops from southern Lebanon in exchange for the proper “security safeguards” came in response to the overtures from Damascus, the paper reported. Negotiations between the two countries were suspended by Israel in March 1996 when Syria failed to condemn a series of Hamas suicide bombings in Israel.
