A Syrian force penetrated Israel territory in the area north of Lake Hulch this morning and kidnapped two United Nations and one Israeli officer who were acting as observers at a post set up in Israel territory. None of the three was armed.
Later in the day, the three men were returned to Israel territory unharmed. The had been sent off to Damascus under guard. After the UN made inquiries about the trio, Syrian authorities promised to release them.
The post, one of four established on Israel soil at the request of the UN, is located at Tel Abu Hanazir. It was clearly marked with fluttering UN flags. The post is opposite an area in Syria which is partly demilitarized. It is more accessible from Syrian territory than from Israel.
