Two young Jews who recently escaped from Syria told a press conference in Stockholm yesterday that Jews in Syria are subject to rigid restrictions in every sphere of life. The two, who refused to identify themselves stressing that their families remain in Syria, said the Jews there are subject to direct persecution, arbitrary arrests and provocation, which have made their life unbearable. Since 1948, they said, no Jew has left Syria legally. The two escapees told the press that during the second half of 1971, there were 20 Syrian Jews arrested, including a woman and a four-year-old child, but that following public protest all over the world most of them were released and there are now eight Jews in jail.
