An Israeli soldier was wounded this morning when Syrian troops entered Israeli territory in the Korazim area near Almagor north of Lake Tiberias and opened fire on Israeli positions. The incident, the second shooting attack in two days carried out by Syrians along the Israeli border, followed a similar attack on Israeli field workers yesterday at Haon settlement near the southeastern shore of Lake Tiberias
In the Korazim attack this morning, the Syrian troops entered Israeli territory at about 10 a.m. local time and began firing on the Israelis with recoilless guns, wounding one Israeli soldier. The Israelis returned the fire and subsequently filed a complaint with the Israel-Syrian Mixed Armistice Commission.
Israeli and Syrian positions exchanged fire yesterday morning after the Syrians opened machinegun and rifle fire on three Israeli tractors ploughing land near Haon settlement. The Syrians continued firing as the Israeli tractor drivers scurried for shelter in the muddy fields. Israeli units then opened fire on the Syrian positions to provide cover for the field workers.
Sporadic firing lasted during the early morning hours in the Haon area yesterday after which the Israelis continued their field work unhampered. The ploughing is essential in view of the seasonal rains which destroy unploughed fields on the slopes of hills. The two latest incidents were believed here to be a continuation of the recent policy on the part of Syria to stir up trouble along the Israeli border with repeated mine-laying and shooting incidents.
