Syrian gunners fired on Israeli farm workers east of Lake Tiberias today for the second day in a row, forcing Israeli forces in the area to return the fire, so that a tractor driver could take cover. There were no Israeli casualties.
The Syrians began shooting with small arms yesterday at a tractor cultivating a field regularly farmed by the Israelis in the Haon area. Today, using artillery, the Syrians set 2 number of field fires which were put out by a local fire brigade. Children of the Haon and Tel Katzir settlements were sent to shelters for several hours during each incident. The first tractor target was hit by some of the 30 Syrian shells. An armored Israeli tractor was put into the field, and the Syrians resumed shooting; At this point the fire was returned, so that the driver could get out of range.
United Nations observers who visited the scene confirmed that the tractor was on Israeli territory, and found fragments of 38-millimeter shells.
