Syrian gunners opened heavy fire today on an Israeli tractor working fields north of Kibbutz Dan near the Israeli-Syrian border. Israelis returned the fire. There were no reports of casualties.
The Syrians used machine guns, recoilless guns and tank guns. About an hour after the shooting began, United Nations observers tried to arrange a cease fire but the Syrians continued shooting for some time after that. The tractor was working on fields consistently cultivated by Israeli farmers and over which there had been no indication of a dispute before.
