Syrian authorities have apparently put some restraints on terrorist activities against Israel from Syrian territory but the Syrians have begun to strengthen their own front line positions in the central and southern sections of the Golan Heights, Israeli intelligence reported today.
The Syrians have been seen using tractors and other heavy equipment to build protective ramps in front of their positions and between them. Israeli sources said. The activity may be the result of the heavy tank-losses suffered from Israeli artillery and tank fire along the front during the battles of Jan. 8.
According to Israeli sources many terrorists have been forced to leave Syrian border villages where they were based. But the Israelis do not believe that terrorist activity from Syria has been eliminated permanently. Sources here said that the Syrian authorities would not be able to resist terrorist pressure and would probably permit them some controlled activity in the future.
