Celebrations are planned in the United States and Palestine to mark the 80th birthday of Miss Henrietta Szold, it was announced today by Hadassah, of which she is the founder.
Miss Katherine Lenroot, chief of the U.S. Children’s Bureau, and Rabbi David de Sola Pool will speak on two NBC broadcasts on Saturday. Hadassah will hold celebrations in its local chapters throughout the country. A $25,000 gift will be sent to Miss Szold to enable her “to foster any phase of work in Palestine which she deems necessary to meet emergency conditions brought about by the war.”
In Palestine, a broadcast to the schools will be held on Friday. A dinner will be tendered to Miss Szold by 250 Palestine notables on Sunday evening, with Isaac Ben-Zvi chairman of the Jewish National Council; Moshe Shertok, head of the Jewish Agency’s political department, and Dr. Judah L. Magnes, president of the Hebrew University, among the speakers. All Jewish periodicals in Palestine have issued special supplements reviewing her life. Settlements which have taken in refugee children brought to Palestine by Miss Szold through the Youth Aliyah movement will pause to pay respects to her.
