Consideration of the British policy in the Middle East is the main purpose of the trip of Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, High Commissioner for Palestine, to London, Arab newspapers here state.
The papers pointed out that Daniel Olivier, Quaker educationalist in the Near East and a leading pro-Arab, the Emir Abdullah and Moshe Shertok of the Jewish Agency have all been to England this summer to discuss Palestine affairs with Colonial Office authorities.
The questions to be discussed between General Wauchope and the Colonial Ministry, according to the Arab papers, are:
1. Plans for a legislative council which, they say, will be created despite strong Jewish opposition.
2. The Haifa-Bagdad Railway whose value to the British Empire’s chain of communications demands its immediate construction and its protection by armed forces in the desert.
3. The fate of Akaba, Red Sea port, and the necessity of an agreement on this point with the Saudi-Arabian government which claims ownership of the port.
4. The question of Iraq where fears have arisen as a result of recent tension with Persia and the attempt of a neighboring state to fight Iraq’s independence and English influence in the kingdom.
There are still rumors that General Wauchope is to become High Commissioner for Iraq or British minister to that country.
