The court in Tangier will hear dual appeals by defendants and prosecution on December 2 in the case of some 40 Jews convicted there in October on charges of having attempted to leave the country illegally or of illegally abetting emigration.
The defendants, many of whom had spent months in jail awaiting trial, are seeking to reverse their conviction. The prosecuting attorney is appealing to the court to re-sentence the convicted men and women on the grounds that the sentences imposed by the court last month were not sufficiently severe.
