Income tax officials who began a work slowdown two weeks ago, agreed to resume their normal work today after the Treasury promised that they would receive incentive and overtime pay beginning April 1. Government revenues dropped to one-tenth the normal amount while the slowdown was in effect. Meanwhile, Israel’s bakers have returned to a normal work schedule following agreement on some of their wage demands.
The main issue, a wage agreement which would exceed labor-management guidelines, remained unsettled and will continue to be negotiated. The bakers began a production slowdown last Wednesday. Bakery owners said their wage demands would require a 20 percent increase in bread prices which the cost-of-living conscious government opposes.
Ashdod port foremen resumed normal work schedules after a special committee was set up to study their demands. Activities at Israel’s second largest port were paralyzed Wednesday.
