Myron C. Taylor, President Roosevelt’s envoy to the Vatican, is taking a hand in negotiations now being conducted in Rome looking toward establishment of a temporary asylum for Polish and German refugees on a Greek island, it was reliably reported here today.
Taylor, as “father of the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees,” is continuing his interest in the refugee problem while fulfilling his mission to the Vatican, and it was said that the Vatican was also cooperating.
The negotiations are being conducted between a representative of the HIAS-ICA Emigration Association and the Greek Legation in Rome for admittance of refugees from the Reich and Poland to a Greek island to await opportunities for permanent settlement elsewhere.
The Greek Legation is understood to be favorably disposed to granting the temporary asylum, provided that funds for their maintenance are guaranteed by relief organizations. The HIAS-ICA representative, on his return to Paris, is expected to bring a detailed report which will be submitted to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, along with Taylor’s sentiments on the matter.
