The charge that anti-Semitic literature is being distributed in the German department of the Women’s College branch of Rutgers University by members of the department, was made here today by Prof. Leonard Bergel, who declares he was dismissed for his attempt to fight the pro-Nazi spirit in the college.
President Robert C. Clothier of Rutgers today appointed a special committee to investigate the charge. The committee will also establish to what extent the anti-Semitic and pro-Hitler propaganda is encouraged by members of the faculty of the Women’s College.
REASONS CHANGED
At first Prof. Bergel was told that he was dismissed for incompetence, although he has taught in the Women’s College branch of the University for more than three years. When the students defended his ability as a teacher, the reason for his dismissal was given as one of economy.
