Formation of a central committee of Jewish teachers’ organizations in New York City took place last night at a mass meeting held at the Central Jewish Institute, 125 East Eighty-fifth street.
The committee will consist of representatives of the four Jewish teachers’ groups: Hebrew Teachers Union, Association of Yeshivah Teachers, Jewish Teachers Union and Jewish Teachers Association.
The aims of the new organization will be: (1) To assure the teachers’ positions. (2) To guarantee a living wage for every Jewish teacher. (3) To found a loan fund. (4) To organize a sick fund. (5) To organize a strike fund which will be used in situations where striking will be unavoidable.
The meeting discussed the code that has been prepared by a committee of teachers, principals and laymen in Jewish education.
Speakers at the meeting included Elias Picheny, who presided; Leo Cohen chairman of the organization committee of the Association of Federation Workers; S. Edelstein, who outlined the history of Jewish teachers’ organizations in this city ## Margolis, who spoke on the economic condition of Jewish teachers today; I Gurrelick, and Dr. Samuel Dinin, who discussed various organizational problems.
