The Turkish Government will henceforth pay the salaries of Turkish-language teachers employed in Jewish and other minority schools in this country, it was announced here today. Teachers of Turkish history and geography will also be put on the government payroll.
It is expected that under the new plan, the six Jewish schools in Turkey will receive an estimated $25,000 annual allocation. The plan marks the first time that Jewish schools in Turkey will receive some form of government subsidy. Jewish schools are now located only in Istanbul and Izmir and are maintained solely by the local Jewish communities.
