The standard of English taught in Israeli schools has declined drastically from that in effect during the Mandatory regime, the London Times reported today in a survey of the teaching of English in the Jewish State.
The survey, which established that there is a severe shortage of English textbooks in Israel, said that while a high standard of written and spoken English is being maintained on the university level, the elementary and secondary schools are not keeping to a high level. The Times article expresses the opinion that this “may be a reflection of the Israeli policy which aims at proficiency in the written language, but neglects the value of the spoken language during schooling.”
