Dr. Carroll V. News-om, president of New York University was awarded today an honorary doctor of science degree by the Technion-Israel institute of Technology at a special convocation of academic and scientific leaders at the Carnegie Endowment International Center.
The degree is being given Dr. Newsom “in recognition of his distinguished achievements in the field of higher education and mathematics and in appreciation of his friendship and fruitful assistance to the institutions of higher learning in Israel. ” Participants at the convocation included Dr Abraham Tallin , board chairman of the American Technion Society: Dr. William Fondiller, society honorary president and David Rose, president.
In accepting the award Dr. Newsom paid tribute to Israel as a “young nation dedicated to the democratic concept. ” Israel’s economic problems, he said, “require the most careful analysis by acknowledged experts” as well as “adequate supplies of power to turn the wheels of industry and to mechanize and irrigate farms.”
