Israel’s United Nations ambassador, Yosef Tekoah, protested to Secretary General Kurt Waldheim last Wednesday against the apparent resumption without consultation with Jerusalem of Dr. Gunnar V. Jarring’s UN-sponsored Middle East peace mission. At a meeting with Waldheim, it was learned here, Tekoah re-emphasized that Israel does not accept Dr. Jarring’s demand that it declare in advance of negotiations its readiness to evacuate the administered territories.
Israel believes that renewal of the Jarring mission in New York when the intermediary arrives there next week may disrupt the prospects for positive Egyptian reaction to Premier Golda Meir’s Knesset speech of Wednesday. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s speech in Cairo is seen here as a total rejection — so far — of Mrs. Meir’s proposal for direct negotiations. Political observers here believe that resumption of the Jarring mission now will block a Mideast solution.
(The Secretary General told UN correspondents last week that Dr. Jarring would arrive at the UN at the beginning of August for a two-week stay to “consult” with the parties concerned “and me,” and make an “up-to-date” analysis of the situation in accordance with Security Council Resolution 242.)
