Israeli Ambassador Yosef Tekoah, exercising his right of reply in this morning’s Security Council debate declared that the Council had failed to even once condemn Arab terrorism and its massacres, and that Israel would not acquiesce to these acts.
Tekoah said that during World War II, Arab leaders, notably the former Mufti of Jerusalem, had collaborated with the Nazis and that now Yassir Arafat, head of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and Dr. George Habash, head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine were doing the same thing. Tekoah declared that the PLO and the PFLP had hired former SS officers to train terrorists.
The Israeli diplomat said Israel will continue to exercise its right of self-defense. Lebanon, he declared, had allowed the terrorists to operate from its territory in violation of international law.
U.S. Ambassador John Scali, answering reporters’ questions after the Security Council adjourned early this afternoon, said he expected an easy resolution which the U.S. could vote for. He said that the Egyptians were pressing for a hard resolution but Lebanon took a softer line.
