Several hundred Tel Aviv bakery workers were in the second day of a strike today protesting against the Israel Government order reducing wages and the Ministry of Supply’s order to bake only simple and inexpensive bread.
Residents of Tel Aviv are now extremely short of bread and bread supplies have been coming into the city since yesterday from neighboring Ramat Gan, Rehovot and even Jerusalem. A truck bringing bread into Tel Aviv from outside the city was attacked last night by pickets who used the vehicle’s gasoline to soak thousands of loaves of bread.
The strikers today raided Ramat Gan bakeries and ruined hundreds of loaves of bread by pouring sand into the dough. The strike was called by the Mapam-controlled Tel Aviv baker’s council. The executive committee of the Histadrut has termed the strike “illegal and unreasonable.”
