Tel Aviv faced the prospect today of a complete shutdown of public transit facilities after the Dan Bus Cooperative rejected a Government appeal and halted its buses during the morning for three hours.
The bus cooperative decided to suspend service in protest against the Government’s refusal to allow it to hike rates by 40 percent. The Transport Fares Authority offered a tentative recommendation of an eight percent increase in fares. The cooperative also announced that if the Authority did not come closer to its demands, it would curtail services, starting Thursday, and operate buses only from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Two other Israeli bus companies, Egged and Hamekasher, also threatened full-scale shutdowns starting Thursday if they were not allowed to institute a substantial fare increases by tomorrow night. Meanwhile, the Dan cooperative decided to dismiss 400 workers as part of a retrenchment program, which brought a threat from all 1,100 of its employes to quit work tomorrow.
