Striking sanitation workers in Tel Aviv caved in to the loud complaints of the public and returned to work at dusk Tuesday after six days of strike left heaping mounds of malodorous garbage baking in the summer heat.

With temperatures hovering in the low 90s, garbage had cooked slowly in giant heaps alongside the restaurants and cafes that form the backbone of social life in this city.

On Monday, the municipality had hired private trash haulers to make inroads clearing away the unhealthy, unsightly and smelly giant plastic bag dumps.

But they were driven back by the strikers, who stoned any vehicle trying to clear the side-walks and roadways.
