Tel Aviv’s garbage collectors began today the task of carting away some 2,000 tons of refuse which piled up in the city during a seven-day strike which was settled last night. Yoset Blatt, sanitation department deputy director, said it would take about a week to remove the backlog of uncollected garbage.

The sanitation workers accepted proposals for a settlement submitted by the Tel Aviv Labor Council. Uri Alpert, Labor Council secretary, said the 800 workers agreed to end the walk-out strike on condition that negotiations began immediately for wage increases.

The demands to be negotiated include an extra effort payment for working on the eves of 10 holidays and for work on Rosh Hashanah eve. The workers will receive an immediate advance of 300 pounds ($100) on new municipal gradings, scheduled to go into effect soon. They will also receive extra pay for the double effort needed to clean up the garbage-laden city.
