The city of Tel Aviv has received a loan of 27,000,000 pounds (approximately $81,000,000) from undisclosed sources for the conversion of its port to a deep water harbor, it was revealed here today by Mayor Israel Rokach. Mr. Rokach made the announcement when he presented his annual budget to the Municipal council.
The Jewish Agency is unable to cope with the many health problems arising as a result of the large immigration movement, Health Minister Moshe Shapira today told the Knesset. He described conditions in the crowded transient camps as hygienically dangerous.” Declaring that nurses are badly needed by government capitals at this time, the Minister issued a call for volunteers. Mr. Shapira disclosed that the government added 500 beds to various hospitals last month, bringing the total under its supervision to 1,300 as contrasted with the 400 which it took over at the end of the Mandatory’s regime.
Premier David Ben Gurion and Daniel Frisch, newly elected president of the Zionist Organization of America, met for two hours this morning. They discussed cultural, economic and philanthropic ties between American Jewry and the Jews of Israel.
The Premier stressed Israel’s need for investment capital as well as its need for American “know-how.” After the interview, Mr. Frisch told newsmen that the Premier is a “man of destiny.” He also revealed that he will advocate the extension of Marshall Plan aid to Israel when he returns home.
