The Tel Aviv Municipality has decided to set up special taxi pick-up zones along the city’s main street to end the traffic tie-ups and confusion which resulted from too many cabs on the major thoroughfares.
The action was taken following clashes between Tel Aviv police and cab drivers early this week when the municipality banned all pick-ups on the main street. The drivers responded by blockading the street with their vehicles and removing their wheels to make it difficult to break up the roadblock.
When police vans began hauling away the wheel-less vehicles, the cabbies shouted insults at the police and several clashes resulted. In an attempt to end the disorders and the traffic tie-ups the new pick-up zones were established.
